For the funding of a research project on the role of the protein Interferon on the development of Sjögren’s syndrome. Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease in which people’s white blood cells attack their moisture-producing glands. Malignant types of the syndrome, where the patient develops a lymphoma and has a high mortality risk, are referred to as Type I, while the syndrome’s benign chronic development is referred to as Type II Sjögren’s. The study will focus on testing the role of the protein Interferon in the progression of Sjögren’s syndrome into Type I or Type II. The study, which will last 2 years, will involve close cooperation with the Hospital for Special Surgery and the University of Chicago, both of which are leaders in the field of Interferon research.
