Restoration
For the Patmos Windmills Restoration Program
The grant partially funded the restoration of three traditional windmills located east of the Patmos Monastery on a hill overlooking the port. The site constitutes a prime image for anyone approaching the island by sea. The project restored one mill to its original functioning state, with a new traditional interior mechanism. The windmill will operate as a “living” museum, with the capacity to produce flour. The two other mills were restored in order to present a harmonious ensemble of all three mills.
Patmos’s landmark is the Holy, Royal, Patriarchal, Stavropegic and Coenobiac Monastery of St. John the Theologian and Evangelist, which was established in late 1000s, dedicated to St. John the Apostle, writer of the Book of Revelation. The Monastery has special privileges granted from the Ecumenical Patriarchate that allow the Archimandrite administering it to report directly to the Patriarch. The benefits the Monastery enjoys, along with the historical and religious significance it bears, are a great source of national and religious pride. In 1981, the Parliament declared Patmos to be a holy island, while in 1999 the Monastery of St. John, the Cave of the Apocalypse, and the traditional residential area that developed around the Monastery were named to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
