The program will attempt to develop a “network” of six green areas in Athens and Thessaloniki where bird habitats can be preserved and their populations observed. Participating students will be responsible for suggesting places for bird nests and and then installing the nests, for monitoring bird behavior, and for contributing to scientific data gathering through use of an electronic, interactive map. The year-long program will end with a public presentation of the findings.
The Hellenic Ornithological Society was founded in 1982 and is the only Greek not-for-profit organization exclusively concerned with the protection of wild birds and their habitats. The organization’s objectives include studying and protecting birds and their habitats in Greece, one of the last remaining natural wildlife sanctuaries in Europe, promoting the organization’s goals to the European Union in cooperation with related European ornithological societies, and informing and educating the public in all matters concerning the birds of Greece. The Hellenic Ornithological Society is a partner of BirdLife International, the largest world organization concerned with the protection of birds and their habitats.
