Merimna – Nonprofit Society for Care of Children and Families Facing Illness and Death
Program support
For a pledge grant for the establishment and first year of operation of the Home Care service. Home care is a basic component of pediatric palliative care that ensures a better quality of life for children and their families in the last stages of life of a seriously ill child. With home care children can spend their last days in a familiar environment, parents and other family members can contribute to the child’s care, and families can be better prepared for the mourning process.
The Home Care program will be implemented in collaboration with the Oncology, Neurology, and Intensive Care Units of the Children’s Hospital Aglaia Kyriakou in Athens.
Merimna was founded in 1995 by a group of scientists to support children who face life-threatening illnesses or who are mourning the loss of a beloved person. Merimna also conducts research and has undertaken publishing initiatives. The association Friends of Merimna was established in 2002 to financially support Merimna. The association is one of the founding members of the federation "Together for the Child," a group of ten nonprofit organizations that support children who face challenging circumstances.
